People in Crypto: The Special Case of Quark

People in Crypto: The Special Case of Quark

About "People in Crypto"

The "People in Crypto" series is meant to show how fictional characters can represent the archetypes of the kinds people we are likely to encounter as we journey through the world of cryptocurrency.

We know about HODLers, known for sticking with their crypto even as the bear markets knock them on their backs and bring them to their knees as they fight to keep moving forward.

We know about pump-n-dumpers, who do all they can to drive up coin prices as high as possible so they can cash out quickly in anticipation of a potentially lethal price drop. Although some cryptos can survive a PND, many fade to oblivion.

We know about the FUDsters-- those purveyors of Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt-- usually found in legacy media networks favored by The Establishment and ruling class.

The Special Case of Quark

As in real life, these fictional characters can be multifaceted. Mainly known for being one archetype or other, they can also exemplify other archetypes within a limited context.

Quark, the Ferengi owner of his bar on the space station where the sereis Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (ST:DS9) takes place, is one of these multifacted People in Crypto. Given his reputation for being a shady player on both sides of the law, his main archetype would be pump-and-dumper. However, just as Quark the character has displayed other sides of himself (among them devoted son, reluctant hero, prideful s.o.b., and mission leader), Quark is a varied crypto player.

Here is how I referred to Quark the first time I mentioned him:

If we're going to follow the crypto antics of Elon Musk, his friendly rival Mark Cuban, and other big-name figures, it's just a matter of time before we consider what fictional characters would think of cryptocurrency. Tony Stark would be a major player. Han Solo would be scheming pump and dumps so he can pay off Jabba the Hutt. Quark... would be on all sides of the Quark Coin crypto (which is real!)....

(Emphasis and ellipses added)

Little did I know how right I was about Quark!

In the world of cryptocurrency, here is where anyone can find Quark:

  • "A network of Bitcoin exchange offices";
  • Validator/Witness Services Provider;
  • Security platform;
  • Blockchains;
  • Cryptocurrencies;
  • Hashing algorithm.

"A network of Bitcoin exchange offices"

  • Quark Kantory Bitcoin is exactly what the sub-heading says it is. Just as Travelex offers (or the defunct Thomas Cook offered) foreign exchange bureaus or stores for exchanging fiat currencies, Quark Kantory Bitcoin performs an analogous service for Bitcoin. If Travelex deals in ForEx, then Quark Kantory Bitcoin deals in CryptEx. Quark Kantory Bitcoin was founded in Warsaw, Poland in 2015, and has national offices in Warsaw, Opole, and Elbląg.

According to its About page on Medium.com, Hash Quark is

The Quark Hashing Algorithm, and the Cryptocurrencies That Use It

According to CryptoRival,

The Quark hashing algorithm is based on a one level hash function and does not require a large amount of RAM. It uses a 64-bit protection against attacks by hackers and it known for its low power consumption. It uses six different cryptographic algorithms to make nine levels of encryption. The six algorithms are Grøstl, Blue Midnight Wish, Keccak, JH, Skein and Blake.

(Hyperlinks in original)

Quark is a less intensive mining or hashing algorithm than Bitcoin's SHA-256, so there are more opportunities for people to mine cryptocurrencies. This made it the hashing algorithm of choice for numerous cryptocurrencies.

Also according to CryptoRival, there are at least 130 cryptocurrencies which use the Quark hashing algorithm rather than the SHA256 algorithm used by Bitcoin. Below is a table showing these 130 cryptos:

While this table isn't meant to be all-inclusive, it is meant to show how prevalent Quark is as a mining algoithm.

(For anyone familiar with Quark from ST:DS9, some cryptos seem like a natural match for our favorite Ferengi. Which ones they are, feel free to note them in the comments section.)

Back to Quark

Just as Quark was an important chracter on ST:DS9, Quark is an important part of the cryptocurrency universe. Just as Quark is known mainly as one archetype but on caasion can exemplify other archetypes, Quark the algorithm has company with other forms of Quark.

Other fictional characters can present as other crypto archetypes. Rocky Balboa is known as a HODLer, he spent much of Rocky V as someone who got REKT; he went from rags to riches and back to rags.

Quark from ST:DS9 was involved in many of the activities aboard Deep Space Nine, some of which were on the wrong side of the law. However, he had enough moments over seven seasons where he could be considered as some alternate archetype or other.

If Quark knew about cryptocurrency, he would be all over it-- not just as pump-and-dumper, but also as an investor, HODLer, a miner, a BUIDLer, a trader, even as a controller and FUDster. This is the special case of Quark.
