Koala with a C

An update on Kiki and Koko.

Kiki and Koko are koalas. They live on Kangaroo Island.
When it comes time for bed Kiki can’t not calm down.

She is jumping on the bed.
Koko can’t stand it anymore and throws a pillow.

“He hit me!” Kiki yells.

Daddy walks in the bedroom looking tired.
He sits down on the bed and says, “It’s time for a story.”

“What story are we going to hear today?” says Koko.

“I want to sit next to Daddy” says Kiki with a little kick.

“Ok. There’s room for both of you. I’ll tell you a story about the time Kangaroo island was known as Koala island. Koalas were different back then. We were a little taller and a little stronger. But the biggest difference was the Koala’s butt. It resembled more of a baboon’s butt than the bouncy pillow butt koalas have today.”

“At that time the Koala island was filled with fierce mighty warriors. Among them stood two tribes. The Kiki tribe and the Koko tribe.”

“Hey are you talking about us? Asked Kiki and Koko.

“Just listen to the story.
In the middle of the island was the big Koala Island sign and a big grandpa Eucalyptus tree. Back then Koalas had not yet discovered how tasty Eucalyptus was. They just liked the way it looked next to the Koala sign. The problem was that the Kiki tribe insisted that Koala should be spelled with a K. And the Koko tribe insisted that Coala should be spelled with a C.”

"Every day the sign on Koala island was changed from K to C and then from C to K. Each tribe would work hard to make a new sign and each day the sign was changed. One day the Koko Coala sign was just too big and the Kiki tribe demanded that the sign go down. "

"When the Koko tribe refused to take the sign down then the great Kiki and Koko battle began. The Kiki tribe threw water balloons and the Koko tribe threw pies. The Kiki tribe then ambushed in the night and knocked down Koko’s sign. The Koko tribe was enraged and trained all the Koko tribe to be on guard. The Kiki tribe also trained brave warriors to fill up water balloons and make cream pies. They each worked hard night and day to protect what they knew was right."

"But there was a joey named Joey who just wouldn’t fight. It’s not that he was trying to be different. He just didn’t feel like doing anything. His friends said to him, “Joey come on. Hurry. The sign was changed again.” Joey just looked up and smiled. Joey was not like the others and they thought he was strange. It took him the whole day to eat and sleep and he seemed to have no time even to play. He was not like the others who ate whatever they could find. He ate only Eucalyptus and he moved very slow.

One early morning Joey the joey found the old Eucalyptus tree in the middle of the island and it seemed to speak to him, “Joey, come over and have a bite.” He scooted close to the tree and grabbed one of the branches. This was the best Eucalyptus he had ever tasted.

Around him a battle grew. The Koalas were engaged in hot debate of the K or the C. Just then another joey saw Joey in the Eucalyptus tree. He said, “look. He is eating from the grandpa Eucalyptus tree.” But Joey looked very happy as a happy Koala should look. As they Joey eating joyfully they wanted some too. Soon they forgot about the sign and just enjoyed nibbling on Bamboo. "

"From that time on they enjoyed Eucalyptus together and didn’t worry about silly things. They didn’t have to go around fighting and making pies. They were just Koalas and spend all day sitting in the tree and sleeping peacefully. Over time they no longer had butts like baboons. Their butts became fluffy like a pillow, well a little hairy. Still with a butt like this a Koala can sleep anywhere and anytime. There’s no need to worry about any old sign.”

“But what happened to the sign daddy?” Asked Kiki.

"Oh, they left it there to this day and to here it stands, K-O-A-L-A. No one has even tried to change it although I still have my convictions it does look better with a C."

I am putting together a series of these short stories. I'm still getting the hang of this. The story here is in a rough draft.

I made the first Kiki and Koko almost two years ago. It's time to upgrade them now and give them some life again.
